Blown Glass (Lampworking) Marble Making Experience with Mike Hurst of Hurst’s Handblown Glass

What:

Have you ever had the desire to try heating and manipulating hot glass? If so, you aren’t alone. Here is your chance. Lampworking is a type of glassblowing using a propane and oxygen fueled torch to safely heat and manipulate glass. When proper safety measures are taken, lampworking is a very safe and fun thing to do. All materials and equipment will be provided. Please read entire description to know what to expect. The glass used for this experience is borosilicate or “Pyrex” as it is commonly known.

This 2 hour lampwork “Experience” will allow you to make some glass marbles of your very own. You will make 2 basic swirl marbles. Individual results may vary. Projects will be available for pick up the following business day, as they must be fired to anneal and strengthen the pieces.

Ages 14 & up.

Please note- We will only be making the items the class is designated for. Please don’t ask to make other things, as we will ONLY be making marbles in this experience. The “experiences” offered are not designed to be ongoing and progressive classes. They are simply offered due to the overwhelming requests for people wanting to try it out. If you sign up for more than one class we will be making the same thing. Due to space and equipment limitations this is limited to 4 participants at a time. This allows for more instruction for each participant. Thanks for your understanding.

Additional information to know before signing up-

Due to the inherent danger of the heat being used, both from the torch and the kiln, the possibility of coming in contact with hot glass and tools and sharp glass is imminent. I ask that you please read the following. This information is not intended to scare or dissuade you, but rather to make you aware of the possible dangers involved that many don’t realize or think of.
We will discuss safety and how to safely blow glass at the beginning of the experience as well.
The torch used is over 5000* F and the working temperature of the glass used (borosilicate or Pyrex) is 1500* to 3000* F.
The kiln used to anneal your projects is held at temperatures up to 1250* F.
I kindly ask you to refrain from the use of alcohol & drugs prior to the time of your experience. Yes, I have had drunk people show up. No, it’s not a good idea. If you are inebriated, you will not be allowed to participate, and your class fee will be forfeited.
Please tie long hair back. I have hair ties available if needed.
Please wear cotton clothing. Cotton / natural fibers do not melt if they come in contact with hot glass or flame.
Short sleeves are the best. If you wear long sleeves they will need to be rolled up.
The area the experience is held in is a working glass and silversmithing area. We try and keep the floor swept and clean, but there is the possibility of small bits of sharp glass or metal on the floor. It is advised to wear closed type shoes.

About the instructor:

Mike Hurst is an Ogden, Utah based lampworker who specializes in pendants, marbles, Christmas Ornaments and more. He began working with glass in January of 1994. Since that time he has passionately studied and practiced the art, always striving to perfect his techniques and learn something new. In addition to lampworking, Mike has experience with glass fusing, glass etching and neon sign making.

Mike’s work is inspired by nature’s beauty, pop culture, the strange and macabre. Halloween and Christmas are his favorite holidays, which is noticeable in his work. His Christmas ornaments, octopuses and evil eye jewelry have become some of his most popular items and his signature pieces.

Mike has been featured in Glassline magazine and several local publications. He and his work will be featured in the 2020 Lifetime Christmas movie “The Christmas Edition” starring Marie Osmond, Carly Hughes, Rob Mayes and Aloma Wright. He sells his work online, locally at The Local Artisan Collective (2371 Kiesel Ave Ogden, UT), at galleries and arts festivals.
