COURSE DESCRIPTION:

For tweens, teens & up. Create fun paintings and illustrations based on your favorite pop culture characters from movies, tv shows, games etc. Both traditional and cartoon drawing & painting techniques will be explored as we take one animated character and make a realistic humanized portrait from it, and one live action person or scene from entertainment and turn it into a cartoon or manga style illustration. Basic sketching and painting experience is a plus, but is not required.

We start classes on the week of January 30th and end on the week of March 6th.
(If you want to take all the classes in this series with Charis, the next one will be “Painting people & Animals” at the same time on Thursdays beginning mid March.)
INSTRUCTOR:
Charis holds a BFA in Illustration from ArtCenter College of Design near Los Angeles. There she studied entertainment design as well as multiple forms of illustration and design. The summer after graduating, she interned at Film Roman, the animation company that makes the show The Simpsons. She has created storyboards for indie film projects as well as displayed her art in many major US cities. Teaching became her primary focus when she moved to Hawaii with her husband (stationed there with the Navy) and taught various art classes on multiple bases as well as in a hotel on Waikiki beach. She spent almost a decade on Oahu, so freediving and island life always inspires her personal paintings. She and her family moved to Utah in 2020 when they said goodbye to military life and now happily reside in Syracuse. She teaches both realistic and stylized drawing and painting in acrylics, gouache, and oils.
