Do you need help creating an idea for your art?

Tip: Creating New Art Ideas
Written by Heather Musante

If you run out of ideas for art or want to make your art more interesting, try a random word generator online. My favorite is: https://randomwordgenerator.com/

It allows you to set:
– the number of words
– the word type (eg., nouns, verbs, adjectives)
– the number of words
– the starting letter of the word(s)
– the ending letter of words
– the number of syllables
– the number of letters

Ways to use this in your art:
1) Get inspiration for an entire scene — set it to 3 nouns all starting with the letter F and get something like — Farmer Fishing Food.  So envision what this scene looks like to you — maybe you see a scene of an overall-clad farmer with a piece of straw in his mouth fishing in a pond on his farm (barn and fields  in the background), with a picnic blanket covered with food.  See — far more interesting than just painting one of those things.

2)  Get inspiration to add some action to the topic you already have in mind — So if you know you want to paint a cartoonish horse but you’re not sure what to make it doing.  Just set the random word generator to 1 word that’s a verb.   And then draw the horse maybe in a courtroom suing the farmer.  Or the horse sitting in a bathtub, soap in hoof, washing himself.  So fun!

3) Get inspiration for some colors or feelings for your next piece of art — Set the random word generator to 8 adjectives and pick one of the eight for your next art piece.  If it comes up with small as one of the words, make some miniaturized versions of your normal art.  (e.g., Miniaturized pottery, tiny beaded earrings, tiny block prints)  If it comes up with the word grey, maybe make something that’s just shade of grey. Or maybe just black, white, and grey.

The possibilities are endless!  So, have fun with it!
